The Roman lawyer Cicero is the first person credited with promulgating the idea of “getting what you deserve.” He wrote, in Book 3 of his De Legibus: “Let the punishment be equal with the offence.” And while that concept surely predates him, Cicero influenced none other than the Founding Fathers—Adams and Jefferson were fans—so he gets the credit.

Corrective rape is targeted rape against non-heterosexuals as a punishment for violating gender roles . It is a form of hate crime against LGBT individuals, mainly lesbians, in which the rapist justifies the act as an acceptable response to the victim's perceived sexual or gender orientation and a form of punishment for being gay. Often, the stated argument of the corrective rapist is that the rape will turn the person straight, "correcting" their sex or gender, . make them conform to societal norms. The term was first coined in South Africa after well-known cases of corrective rape, such as that of sports star Eudy Simelane , became public.
Overall, the evidence is fairly compelling that homosexual domestic violence exceeds heterosexual domestic violence. The limited scientific literature suggests that physical domestic violence occurs every year among less than 5% of traditionally married couples, 20% to 25% of cohabiting heterosexuals, and approximately half of lesbian couples. The evidence is less certain for gays, but their rate appears to fall somewhere between that for unmarried, cohabiting heterosexuals and lesbians.
